Whirligig Beetle (gyrinus substriatus)

If you see a small, shiny beetle swimming around in circles on the top of the water, then it is a probably a whirligig beetle. It is a carnivore and is always looking out for its next tasty snack. It hunts prey both on the top of the water and deeper down under the water too. When it senses or sees its prey it will whizz off in that direction. They are scavengers and tend to eat animals which are dead or dying, rather than killing things themselves.

One amazing fact about whirligig beetles is that their eyes are split into two separate pairs of eyes with different jobs. One pair looks out above the water and the other pair looks down under the water. So they really are able to keep an eye on everything at once!
