Great Ramshorn Snail (planoribarius corneus)

We see two different types of snail in the pond at Scotswood Garden. This one, the great ramshorn snail, has a beautiful, flat, dark, spiral shell, sometimes with a touch of red, and two long feelers.

Although they are technically omnivores, most of their diet comes from plants, their favourite food being algae. Like other snails, they have a membrane a bit like a tongue which is covered in tiny teeth. They use this to scrape or break up food before they digest it.
