Lesser Water Boatman (corixa punctata)

Like its bigger cousin, the lesser water boatman gets its name from its back legs which it uses like oars to paddle through the water.

It is swims on its front, whereas the greater water boatman swims on its back. The other big difference between the two insects is that the lesser water boatman is a herbivore, eating only algae and small bits of vegetation. It uses its short front legs to feed.
