Rosemary Leaf Beetle (chrysolina americana)

This insect is a relatively new arrival to the UK. It was first seen in the UK in 1963 and then again in 1994. Since then, it has spread throughout the UK> As the name suggests, it feeds on herbs such as rosemary, lavender and thyme. It lay its eggs on these plants and its larvae also feed on herbs. It can be considered a pest by gardeners, but its shell is a beautiful shiny mix of colours.

The latin name includes the word "americana" but it doesn't live in the americas at all. It is thought that this was a mistake by the person who first identified it.  It is found in other parts of Europe and Africa too.
