Blue Damselfly

Enallagma cyathigerum Enallagma cyathigerum Les Binns

Common Blue Damselfly (enallagma cyathigerum)

We quite often see blue damselflies at Scotswood Garden. As young, they live in the water and only become flies when they mature into adults.

You can tell dragonflies and damselflies apart by how they hold their wings when they are still. Dragonflies hold their wings out to the side of their bodies, whereas damselflies fold them along the length of their bodies.
