Shaggy Inkcap (coprinus comatus)

This striking fungus is known for its curvy white "scales". These give it a woolly appearance which explains why it is sometimes known as "lawyer's wig".

Like lots of fungi, it changes shape over time. It starts off long and tall, with a dome shaped top. At this point it is usually all white. Over time, this changes into a bell shape (as in this photo). It also gradually turns black from underneath, and dissolves away.

It is found in parks, gardens, grassland and the roadside.
