Peacock Butterfly (inachis io)

The stunning peacock butterfly has eye spots that are designed to startle a predator by looking like the eyes of a much larger creature. The undersides of the wings are very dark and look like dead wood but are also beautiful if you look at the detail. The caterpillars like to eat nettles which is why it is important to leave patches of nettles to grow in gardens.
