Newt - video of palmate newts

Palmate Newt Palmate Newt Lily Horseman

Take a look at this wonderful footage of the newts in our pond filmed by Mick, one of our volunteers with an underwater camera. The newt that you can see to the left of the screen with the large, webbed back feet is definitely a male palmate. During the breeding season they develop webbing on their back feet and a tail filament. We are not sure about some of the other newts that can be seen in this image. Any ideas?

Adult newts live on land for most of the year and make their way to the pond during the breeding season. The female lays individual eggs which she attaches to a leaf and then carefully folds the leaf over. The newts live the first stage of their life as larvae in the pond.
