Common Hogweed (heracleum sphodylium)

Also known as cow parsnip this plant is great for pollinators. It can take over meadows, so it needs to be managed. This can be done by cutting the heads off before they drop their seed. The young shoots are edible, however common hogweed should be treated carefully for two reasons. Firstly, it is similar in appearance to hemlock, which is poisonous, and secondly although it is not nearly as dangerous as giant hogweed, the sap of common hogweed can also cause rashes and burns to the skin.
