Southern Hawker Dragonfly (Aeshna Cyanea)

The Southern Hawker Dragonfly (also is known as the Aeshna Cyanea) is a sizeable inquisitive Hawker usually seen by themselves. You would most likely find an Aeshna Cyanea in non-acidic waters. They tend to breed in small ponds, often in someone's backyard. The males are often seen patrolling by a ponds edge or river, where they fight away intruders. They hunt well away from water and can usually be found in woodland areas. An Aeshna Cyanea can generally be found in large parts of southern, and central England and Wales. When it comes to comparing it with other Hawkers, they are similar in appearance with other Hawkers. They can be distinguished by its colouration and its broad, intensely coloured ante-humeral stripes on the back of the thorax. When identifying this particular Hawker; you can look at their length which 70mm, Male: dark with bright green and blue markings. Rare blue form only has blue markings. Female: brown with bright green markings.

Fact:

The Southern Hawker is a very curious dragonfly: males will often fly towards the observer, hovering nearby to have a closer look.
