Grey Heron (ardea cinera)

Grey herons don't live at Scotswood Garden, but sometimes visit our ponds in search of a tasty newt or two!

Grey herons are large birds which eat fish, ducklings, small mammals and amphibians. They stand completely still in shallow water or on the bank, watching the water, and wait patiently until their prey comes close enough for them to pounce on it with their long, sharp beaks.

Life isn't always easy for grey herons. Often other birds attack them because they think they are a threat to their young, due to their size.

Grey herons are easily recognised with their long legs, neck and long sharp yellow bill. They also have a very distinctive "flappy" flight, which is another good way to spot them.

Herons nest in the tops of tree, usually in groups. These groups of heron nests are known as a "heronry".
