Alder (alnus glutinosa)

Alder is another native, deciduous tree which we find at Scotswood Garden. It usually has smooth bark and often has white spots of lichen on its trunk.

Alder, like willow, grows well in damp ground and can often be found close to rivers or in boggy area. As a result, it is sometimes used in boatbuilding. Much of Venice is built on alder piles as it is a wood which doesn't rot in water. When cut, the inside of alder is a really bright orange colour.

Alder has lovely catkins and flowers, which later transform into seeds which resemble mini pine cones. These seeds have pockets of air in them which mean that they can float away and disperse far from the tree. Research has shown that these seeds can stay afloat for up to a whole year!
